There are a couple of thoughts on washing baby laundry. By far the easiest to do is nothing different. Add your baby's clothes to the family wash using the family detergent. If your baby shows no reaction, great. Just keep doing what you've been doing. At this stage it is unnecessary to buy special baby detergent.
If a member of the family works in an environment where chemicals, minerals, smokes, etc., may come into contact with their clothing, make certain that this clothing is washed separately.
Now What?
Your baby develops rashes or has irritated areas? Try a dye, scent, or perfume free, regular laundry detergent. This usually does the trick. Wash all the family's clothing together. The advantage of choosing this route is that it's easier to do everybody's laundry together with one detergent.
Still Having Problems?
Your baby is still having reactions, as a last resort, bite the bullet and try baby detergent. Your baby's laundry should be done separately from the rest of the family for quite some time. Make certain that all baby laundry that will come into contact with your baby's skin is washed in baby detergent. This includes every article of clothing and cloth diapers, towels, wash clothes, bibs, every piece of bedding including quilts and comforters, every receiving blanket, car seat liner, stroller liner, playpen pad and even Mom's shirts.
Baby Laundry Tips
Results for individual fabrics may vary. Before treating any garment, always first refer to the instructions on the care label. These are very useful baby laundry tips, especially for the inexperienced. Just go to the website, click on one of the material stain problems and bingo you've saved a $50.00 romper.
What ever your final choice is regular detergent or baby detergent, be sure to wash all your baby laundry before any is worn. Be sure to check the tags on your baby's sleepwear. If the garment reads flame resistant or flame retardant, do not use fabric softener. The use of fabric softener can reduce the flame resistance of the sleepwear.
